This list could have gone up to 100, but we want to keep it sweet and highlight the most important facts.  So here’s 10 reasons to eat organic-

 

1.  It’s more nutritious.  Research has shown that organic food has more nutrients than non-organic food.  It comes from soil that hasn’t been bombarded with chemicals and depraved of a essential minerals and nutrients.  Vitamins, antioxidants, and essential minerals are found in higher concentration in organic foods.

 

2. There’s no chemicals.  The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides, and 30% of insecticides potentially cancer-causing.  There have been studies linking the thousands of chemicals used in farming with diabetes, obesity, cancer, autism, Parkinson’s disease, male sterility, genital deformities, female infertility, miscarriage, infant deformities, ADHD, hormonally caused gender confusion, asthma, allergies, accelerated aging, and smaller penises in boys.  Need I say more?

 

3.  Save money.  While you may pay a little more for groceries, it is likely the lifetime cost of eating organic will be significantly lower than the many health problems associated with the chemicals and inadequate nutrients associated with non-organic food.  There are also costs added to our taxes to clean our drinking water and environment.

 

4.  No GMOs.  Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our diets have been linked with a myriad of health issues such as antibiotic resistance and exacerbating food allergies.  In order to receive the “Certified Organic” seal, organic food cannot be GMO.

 

5. Reduce pollutants in our ecosystem.  The same chemicals that will pollute your body will pollute our world.  The water we drink and the air we breathe are polluted by the pesticides, hormones, and chemicals used so support what has now become “conventional” farming.  Increased organic farming will help reduce these toxins and keep our environment pure.

 

6.  Better conditions for animals.  Even if you’re just drinking milk or eating eggs, animal welfare has much higher consideration at organic farms.  The health of the animals is essential to producing a quality product (they can’t just be pumped with antibiotics to improve health).

 

7.  Save our farms for future generations.  No-till farming methods that have become common world-wide.  This method has caused significant topsoil erosion, leaving the soil essential useless for non-chemically-invasive farming.  Organic soil, by contrast, contains significantly more beneficial microbes, earthworms, and insects to help maintain natural soil health.

 

8.  Improved Fertility.  If we want to have future generations to use that healthy soil, eating organic will help.  Mammal studies have demonstrated that organic diets result in increased ovum (egg) production.  Conversely, mammals eating a non-organic diet have shown declined fertility with each successive generation.

 

9.  Support small-scale and local farmers.  Much of the organic farming in the US is still done by small farms.  By buying local, you are helping out your community, giving the farmers better profit margins, and even benefiting the environment by reducing the energy it take to get the food to your plate.

 

10. All the cool kids are doing it.  Everyone from Michelle Obama to Ed Norton are supporting organic agriculture.  The evidence is clear that organic food is better for ourselves and our world, to the point that it has become a cultural movement.
